Laboratory Bioassay and Greenhouse Evaluation of a Pine Tree Sub- strate Used as a Container Substrate

چکیده
Bioassays with tomato and lettuce seeds and three plant experiments with marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) ‘Inca Gold’ were conducted in the laboratory and greenhouse, respectively, in order to investigate possibilities of determining and mitigating the effects of phytotoxins in pine tree substrate (PTS). PTS is produced by grinding loblolly pine tree (Pinus taeda L.) logs, and using as horticultural growing substrate. PTS extracts obtained with cold and hot water reduced the germination rate and radicle growth of tomato and lettuce. After the washing, an improvement was monitored for radicle length of both species. The germination index supported the data of radicle length showing a better performance after the substrate washing. Radicle growth of tomato in extracts from PTS used in a plant growth experiment was improved after leaching PTS six times. The performance of marigold plants was similar to bioassays with tomatoes and lettuce. Marigold growth was improved by pretreatments of PTS. Some of these pretreatments could be recommended for use in the manufacturing process for PTS or from growers before planting. However, the best results were shown in a commercial peat-lite substrate.

Chipped Pine Logs: A Potential Substrate for Greenhouse and Nursery Crops
Due to uncertainties of future supplies of pine bark (PB) and peatmoss, ground Pinus taeda logs [pine chips (PC)] were compared to ground PB as a potential container substrate for japanese holly (Ilex crenata Thunb. ‘Chesapeake’), azalea (Rhododendron obtusum Planch. ‘Karen’), and marigold (Tagetes erecta Big. ‘Inca Gold’). Plants were potted in 2.8-L plastic containers 8 Apr. 2004 with either ...

Knowledge about the relationship between tree height (H) and diameter at breast height (D) is crucial for forest planning, monitoring, biomass estimation, and forest stands dynamics description. In this study, 20 different height-diameter models were evaluated to estimate accurately the height of the trees of Pinus brutia and Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis species in Arabdagh region (...
متن کاملChanges in Chemical and Physical Properties of Pine Tree Substrate and Pine Bark During Long-term Nursery Crop Production
The objective of this study was to evaluate a pine tree substrate (PTS) for decomposition, changes in physical and chemical properties, and substrate carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux (microbial activity) during a long-term production cycle under outdoor nursery conditions. Substrates used in this study were PTS constructed using a 4.76-mm hammer mill screen and aged pine bark (PB). Plastic nursery c...
